Capital City
The capital city of Latvia is Riga (founded in 1201).This city officially became the capital of Latvia in 1918. Riga has a population of 658,640 inhabitants, making it home to more than one third of Latvia's population. The area of Riga is approximately 304 km squared. During the Second World War, Riga was bombed and many of its buildings were destroyed. The government realized its new potential as a tourist attraction and decided to rebuild parts of the old town.
